Last week at Permanent Impressions in Lemoyne, the father of two young children had footprints of his 5-month-old daughter, Brynlee, tattooed on the left side of his chest with her birth date and the Latin word for daughter.The tattoo joins a similar design Kephart had done on the right side of his chest of 2-year-old son Trey's footprints surrounded by the Latin words for honor, respect, loyalty and family."Generally speaking, tattoos are permanent. It always means much more if you can find something in your life, and your children - no matter what - will be your children," he said.At Red Beard Ink Tattoo and Body Piercing in Penbrook, Pa., parents of all backgrounds come into the shop requesting children's portraits, names and symbolic images such as teddy bears or baby rattles, said owner Robert Treat. He has accommodated simple requests for children's initials to complex designs of hockey sticks and hockey mask for a father in honor of his child's favorite hobby.The trend of child-related body art is not new, but it has picked up in popularity in recent years, Treat said.Helping to fuel the surge is the number of celebrities recognizing their children with tattoos.
Thai Tattoo Tradition Draws Worldwide DevoteesTattoo Designs: For centuries, Thai soldiers have covered their bodies in protective tattoos called Sak Yant. Today, the ancient ritual is booming and thousands of people in Thailand and beyond are flocking to master artists to have the powerful designs inked on their bodies. The Wat Bang Phra Buddhist temple, about 30 miles west of Bangkok, is one of the most highly esteemed locations for Sak Yant. Dozens of monks and master artists, who have spend years perfecting the art, can be found there. One afternoon, a group of men many already covered head to toe with tattoos discuss, in the courtyard, how best to use the canvas of their skin. The dirty, dilapidated campus covered with cobwebs may not immediately invoke an aura of prestige, but these Sak Yant devotees are less interested in the buildings than the designs that will soon cover their bodies.
Design Thursday: Design Miami preview: Designer TatsTattoo Designs: Want to pay the ultimate homage to your favorite artist? Now you can commission a limited edition tattoo by a range of trendy international artists, and spend the rest of your life as a walking gallery exhibit. Design agent provocateur Tobias Wong announced last Friday at Core 77's design offsite, “Design, Wit, and the Creative Act," that he would be fielding a show at this year's Design Miami in which adoring fans can select an original design by one of eight artists (including Tord Boontje, Lawrence Weiner, Hella Jongerius,Yves Behar, Vito Acconci, 5.5 Designers, and Kaws) and have a tattoo artist execute it on a body part of their choosing. Once the show is over, the designs will be retired, much as an artist might destroy the plate for a print. Boontje's design is especially appealing.
Gratuitous 'Hitman' just shoots blanksTattoo Designs: Timothy Olyphant ("Live Free or Die Hard"), who deserves much better, stars in this video game adaptation about a guy with a shaved head who is raised from birth to be an assassin. For no apparent reason, he has a bar code tattooed on the back of his shaved head.
