Malevolent Mortgages Under Attack

The mortgage market here in the UK is an incredibly large, complex and varied beast. For the record, there are 11.7 million domestic home loans, with total mortgage debt at £1,097 billion. In other words, the average mortgage is now almost £93,800, or roughly twice what it was ten years ago. What's more, with over 8,500 different mortgages to choose from, it's hard for homeowners and homebuyers to find their ideal home loan.

This is especially the case at the lower end of the market, in the 'impaired credit' or sub-prime sector, which provides high-interest mortgages and secured loans to people with low incomes or poor credit histories.For many years, I've been expressing my concerns about shady practices this area, which I call 'the Wild West' of the mortgage world.

Since 1972, the Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development has served homeless and at-risk youth in Maricopa County by helping them understand and achieve their individual potential. Recently, the organization teamed up with the Arizona Museum for Youth and Essential Theatre of Tempe to offer 20 young people the opportunity to learn printmaking methods from artist-in-residence Damian Charette.

The students were very eager and willing to learn and express themselves, says Charette. Im amazed at their ability to grasp a new art technique within a short time and create prints using their own life as a source of inspiration. As a result of this collaborative pilot program, each of the participating youths created monotype prints to display at an exhibition entitled Youth at Risk: Tumbleweed Printmaking Project, which will open Saturday, April 21 in the Arizona Museum for Youths South Gallery.

Buy now, think later – “generation spend” exposed

Unbiased.co.uk's fifth annual report highlights the buy now, think later culture currently inherent within Britain and also defines the five different types of spender on the high street. Although half of the population see themselves as “Bargain Spenders" who are always keen to save money on a purchase, the emphasis for most respondents is still heavily on spending, rather than saving their money – the signature trait of “Generation Spend". Particularly amongst young people there still exists a refusal to acknowledge the need to budget and save for the long term, as 28% of 16-24 year olds (and one in every four male adults) save only towards large purchases.

Further supporting the notion of the younger generation's preference for spending rather than saving, Unbiased.co.uk's research reveals that nearly half (48%) of 16-24 year olds' top priorities, should their spending increase, are clothes and entertainment.
