'Hitman' can't decide between hard-core action, escapism
Tattoo Designs: "Hitman" looks like Hollywood's comic-book-ish replacement for the recently wrapped-up Bourne franchise. It stars Timothy Olyphant as the unstoppable programmed-to-kill assassin who finds out he's expendable, then goes on a rampage of revenge.
The music is the same, and so is the European travelogue - "Hitman" bounces from Russia to Istanbul to London as its title character looks for answers while he's stalked by assassins from his own organization. The movie even gives its hero (he has no name) a trampy girlfriend, the more to ape the original Bourne.
The big difference is "Hitman's" taste for larger-than-life action set pieces. It has some of Bourne's realistic close-quarter physical combat, but also (it's based on a video game) the big, slow-motion slaughter-fest - the Hitman holds two automatic weapons and shoots cross-armed, looking grimly ahead as he sends broken glass and bodies flying, killing everyone in an arms dealer's lair except the hookers.
Man dies in east N.O. car crash
Tattoo Designs: A man was killed Friday morning in a one-car crash in eastern New Orleans, police said. Meanwhile, the Orleans Parish coroner's office released the identities of two men killed, one in a motorcycle crash and the other in a construction accident, and released the description of a man who drowned in the Intracoastal Waterway.
In Friday's accident, Justin Phoung Tran, 30, of New Orleans was killed shortly after 6 a.m. when he apparently lost control of the 2000 Nissan he was driving south on Bullard Avenue near Levy Street. The car hit a light pole and flipped several times, ejecting Tran, police spokeswoman Shereese Harper said. Tran died at the scene.
Blood and alcohol tests will be performed, police said. Mike Wahl is investigating.
Tran's death appeared to be accidental, but an autopsy will be performed today, said chief coroner's investigator John Gagliano, who released his identity.
Good grit: A vibrant, funky city (not lonely)
Tattoo Designs: Grit is a good word. Thanks to an Oct. 20 story in this paper, Adam Leech had an interview with David Adams, a candidate for City Council. That election has now happened. Yet, the grit word came up and stuck tot me like, well, grit. Perhaps wet grit.Being from the South, I wish I wasn't so much reminded of grits, but so it goes. Grits are pretty darn good, actually.
This is not about the food grits, It is all about grit and grittiness. I mean, I really, really agreed with Mr. Adams. It was about Portsmouth. What sane person wants to live in a sanitized Disneyworld with no grit? Not me. I even bet Portsmouth gets the sort of tourist who walks a bit slowly and really looks at things. Not someone who wants to stand in line and see a reality that is not a reality. More like a nightmare, if you ask me.

Moore remembered. For Valdez, visits to Pilo Caf in Laredo, once owned by his great-great-grandfather, gave him an education in the Mexican music his grandfather, a man perpetually outfitted with a thin tie, khaki pants, and manicured curls, played with his band.
Now I go back there and I see these men who were in a band with my grandfather,
Valdez said of the caf, and they all sit out there and still play when they get off of work and everything.
